Girls With Wings awards its Second Annual Scholarship to Amy T. Blechman
Lakewood, Ohio -- December 2, 2008
Girls With WingsTM awarded $1000 for flying lessons to a future pilot from Rahwey, NJ. Girls With Wings (GWW), an organization using women in aviation as role models to inspire girls to achieve their full potential, trusts it has found this year's role model in Amy Blechman, a junior at Dowling College majoring in Aviation Management with a Professional Pilot minor. Amy assured us that she has a deep-rooted passion for aviation, "I think about it all the time. It is my first thought in the morning and my last thought as I close my eyes to rest at night."
Prior to the November 1st deadline, GWW received many incredible essays stating why the applicant believes she is a role model for Girl With Wings, to include her motivation, inspirations and future plans. Ultimately, the winning submission was judged on her willingness to be a superlative GWW role model and by showing potential to continue her interaction with the GWW organization, via the website and events, so she assists GWW in encouraging more young girls to have an interest in aviation.
Amy has proven her ability to mentor others after working as a high school senior to help freshmen adapt to life in high school in order to have a productive experience and prepare for college. She also tries to spark an interest in aviation in other people, not just girls, and shares with them what a rewarding, interesting and amazing field it is. Her full essay is on www.girlswithwings.com/Amy.html.
Although the award is less than what a private pilot's license costs, the intent of the scholarship is to provide motivation and incentive to pursue her goals. As Brenda Alarcon, who was awarded the scholarship last year, states, "Winning the scholarship portrayed me as a role model to young girls with dreams just like me, and now I really want to prove that it is possible to fulfill your dreams no matter what!"
